Who We Are

The Florida Institute for Commercialization of Public Research (the Institute) is a statewide, quasi-government, not-for-profit corporation focused on economic development through the commercialization of new discoveries generated from publicly-funded research. The Institute is a collaboration between the state university technology transfer offices, led by University of Florida's Office of Technology Licensing, and it is located in South Florida within the Florida Atlantic University Research & Development Park. The Institute receives operational support from The Enterprise Development Corp. of South Florida.

Florida's universities play an active role in the economic development of the state, with public and private sector investments in research at major Florida research universities totaling more than $1.6 billion in 2007. The majority of that funding, or $975 million, came from federal sources, while industrial sources added $152 million. An additional $506 million was awarded by the state and the numerous non-for-profit organizations and partnerships supporting R&D and innovation in Florida. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in licensing technology to startup companies both within and outside the state.

There are eleven public universities within Florida’s state university system with specialization across a broad spectrum of science and technology areas.  They include:
