Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research and Dawson James Securities Form Alliance

Partnership to Augment Early Investment in Florida-based Innovation Companies

Gainesville and Boca Raton, FL – December 19, 2013 - The Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research (the Institute) and Dawson James Securities, Inc. (“Dawson James”) announced today that they have formed an alliance to formalize and increase financing assistance for innovation-based companies, from early stage through Initial Public Offering (IPO) (the “Alliance”).

The Institute is a statewide, nonprofit organization that identifies, mentors and provides seed funding to qualified companies that spin out of Florida’s universities and research institutions. Florida-based Dawson James Securities has become a leader in bringing investment capital to emerging growth science and technology companies and through the Alliance, will coordinate company financing from angel investors, venture capitalists, private equity and public markets. The primary objective of the Institute and Dawson James in this Alliance is to expand Florida’s innovation platform by identifying and assisting qualified startup companies, expanding Florida’s angel investor base, increasing early- stage funding to companies, and preparing them for long term capital attraction and growth.

“Formed in 2007 by the Florida legislature, the Institute leverages a $2B research base to support new company and job creation based on publicly-funded research,” said Institute CEO Jamie Grooms. “The Institute has relationships with investors and an infrastructure and process to build Florida’s next great entrepreneurs and companies, and this partnership will enable us to help them bridge early funding gaps and attract later stage investment for long term growth and success.”

“Dawson James Securities, as a full-service boutique investment bank that has been assisting emerging growth companies since 2004, is interested in identifying and supporting quality new companies spinning out of Florida’s public and private research institutions,” said Robert Keyser, Jr., Dawson James CEO. “Ranked among the top 5 Wall Street placement firms for 2013 based on the number of completed transactions, we have broad investor placement capabilities that we believe will be very beneficial to Florida companies.”

With venture capital investors focused now on mid-later stage companies, angel investment has become a leading source of funding for seed and early stage companies. Florida has a large population of high net worth individuals seeking to diversify their portfolios and bridge funding gaps until companies are ready to raise growth capital through the public markets. Through the Alliance, the Institute and Dawson James will identify potential early stage investors, leverage an existing spinout company infrastructure and provide a platform for investors to assess quality startup company opportunities. Bridging these early funding gaps will facilitate later stage investment and create a robust, end-to-end funding ecosystem for Florida companies.
